Paradise California Eatery Closess Files Bankruptcy

The Canteena at 6067 Skyway Road in Paradise, California has shuttered its doors with its proprietor filing for relief under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code. The Canteena was a sports bar known for excellent rolled tacos and for being a great place to watch UFC fights. Financial difficulties have been cited by the owner as the motivation in closing the Canteena and filing for bankruptcy protection in Paradise. However, unwanted attention to the Canteena from the community arose in the aftermath of the tragic deaths of 26-year-old Andrew Thomas and 23-year-old Darien Ehorn. proprieter files bankruptcy

It’s unknown whether potential liability from the deaths of Thomas and Ehorn may have contributed to the decision to file bankruptcy. However, the estates of Thomas’s and Ehorn’s are both, indeed, listed in the bankruptcy as unsecured creditors.

Thomas may have been intoxicated when he & Ehorn drove off from the Canteena together with Thomas driving his Toyota 4Runner. Beyond that, it’s not entirely clear what occurred. Law enforcement in Paradise charged that Thomas was alleged to have been driving under the influence when his 4Runner rolled over ejecting Ehorn. It appears, from the available video, that they were being pursued by Paradise Police Officer Patrick Feaster.

Officer Feaster, from his dash cam, appears to dart out from his cruiser and hastily draw and fire his service revolver shooting Thomas in the neck as he tries to climb from the car seconds after the rollover. Darien Ehorn died soon after the accident and is survived by her three-year-old son. A “gofundme” account was established online to assist the family with her funeral expenses and for her son and can be found here.

Andrew Thomas died a couple of weeks later. The neck wound had left Thomas paralyzed from the neck down. The police dash-cam video showing Thomas being shot by Officer Feaster while Thomas tries to climb out of the car wreck will cause those viewing it to pause and ask why the officer took aim and fired. The available record of evidence and the consequences to Officer Feaster is beyond the scope of this article. The police dash-cam video may be viewed below. Paradise, California which some say received its name from the Pair o’ Dice Saloon, has a population of about 26,000. It may be expected that Barney O’rourke’s on Elliott Road and Kings Tavern on Clark will begin to see increased business with the closing of the Canteena. Comments appreciated.
